Astroturf was first developed in the 1960s, its synthetic fibre is mostly used to reduce maintenance and to provide a more even playing surface. There has been much controversy about the “plastic” surface and I certainly remember the Astro-burns in the late ‘80s. These days we are on a 3rd and 4th generation turf but how are things shaping up when we look at the injuries compared to real grass?

A Review of Football Injuries on Third and Fourth Generation Artificial Turfs by Sean Williams, Professor Patria A. Hume and Stephen Kara concluded there is strong evidence for similar rates of injury between new generation artificial turfs and natural turfs. Likely increased risk of ankle injury being the exception.
